Start with the rule, then the beach

Choose the beach section before setting out

Tenby’s Council-controlled beach areas run from 1 May to 30 September. A beach name can include both a controlled and a permitted section, so use the linked Council map and entrance signs before walking onto the sand.

What “dog friendly” means here

Every card links to the source for its rule and access details. A beach can be dog friendly only in a named part. A beach can be dog friendly only in a named section, and a foot-access cove can have livestock or steep-path conditions that matter as much as the sand rule.

Summer-friendly choices

Manorbier and Penally

Separate arrivals outside the central North Beach summer ban. Check beach signs before walking from Penally towards South Beach.

Manorbier, about 6 miles west of Tenby

Manorbier Beach

Sand and the shore at Manorbier Beach

Best for: A quieter all-year beach day with a castle backdrop.

The dog ruleManorbier is not listed in the current Pembrokeshire seasonal restricted-beach set. Keep checking local signs for temporary conditions.

Lead rule
No seasonal promenade lead rule is stated in the current visitor rule list. Keep dogs controlled around other beach users and the coast path.
Access
Visit Wales describes valley parking behind the beach and a cliff-top option. The sea can have strong currents.
Arrival
Use the Manorbier Beach map pin as the beach arrival. Choose parking separately and follow current local signs to the sand.
Before you go
This is a dog-access guide, not a water-safety assessment.

Penally, east of central Tenby

Penally Beach

Open sand and the sea at Penally Beach

Best for: A long sandy walk away from North Beach’s summer ban.

The dog rulePenally is a distinct eastern arrival. The nearby South Beach has a partial seasonal restriction, so use the marked boundary rather than assuming the continuous sand has one rule.

Lead rule
No specific seasonal lead rule is stated for Penally in the current official visitor guidance.
Access
The beach connects to South Beach at low tide. Do not infer the permitted boundary from the tide line.
Arrival
Open the official coordinate pin beside the Coast Path, rather than a generic Penally search. The station-to-beach route crosses dunes and can close when the rifle range is in use.
Before you go
North Beach and Harbour Beach are fully restricted from 1 May to 30 September.

Mapped seasonal zones

South Beach and Lydstep

These beaches have partial restrictions from 1 May to 30 September. The official map and the signs at the arrival decide the usable section.

Tenby town, south of Castle Hill

Tenby South Beach

Tenby South Beach, with town and wide sand visible from above

Best for: An off-season town beach, or a summer visit after checking the boundary signs.

The dog ruleSouth Beach has a partial dog restriction from 1 May to 30 September. The official map places the red no-dogs area at the town and lifeguard-station end; paired boundary markers show where the permitted beach section begins toward the golf course and Kiln Park side.

Lead rule
From 1 May to 30 September, the map marks dogs on lead on the promenade and car parks. That is separate from the permitted beach section east of the boundary markers.
Access
The long sand runs toward Penally. Central Tenby parking fills quickly in summer.
Arrival
Use the selected Tenby South Beach card on the Esplanade side, then use the official map and beach signs before choosing sand. The permitted section is toward the golf course and Kiln Park side.
Before you go
A partial restriction is not all-beach summer permission.

Lydstep Haven, about 4 miles east of Tenby

Lydstep Beach

The beach at Lydstep Haven

Best for: A sheltered nearby bay when you have checked the summer map before using the sand.

The dog ruleLydstep has a partial dog restriction from 1 May to 30 September. The red no-dogs area covers the beach arc in front of Lydstep Beach Holiday Resort and continues east from Lydstep Slipway; use the marked transition and on-site signs for the permitted section.

Lead rule
No blanket lead rule is stated in the current visitor rule list. Follow signs at the beach and holiday-park approaches.
Access
This is a small bay beside holiday accommodation, so access and parking are more constrained than at open beaches.
Arrival
Use the selected Lydstep Beach card on the west side of the bay, then follow the official map and local signs to the southern and western permitted section below the slipway.
Before you go
Use the public beach approach and respect signed private facilities.

The useful short answers

Questions about dog-friendly Tenby beaches

Which Tenby beaches have summer dog controls?

North Beach, including Harbour Beach, has a whole-beach dog restriction from 1 May to 30 September. South Beach, Castle Beach and Lydstep have mapped partial restrictions.

Can I use a beach name alone to find the summer dog area?

No. A named beach can include both a restricted section and a dog-permitted section. Use the official map linked from each card and the signs at the entrance. Do not infer a legal boundary from the tide line or a broad town pin.

Can dogs use North Beach or Harbour Beach in summer?

No. North Beach and Harbour Beach sands are fully restricted from 1 May to 30 September. The promenade and car parks are separately dogs-on-lead areas, and yellow lifeguard overlays do not permit dogs on red beach sand.

Where is the clearest nearby summer alternative?

Manorbier is not listed in the current seasonal restricted-beach set. Penally is a distinct eastern arrival, but check signs before walking back toward South Beach.
