Start with the rule, then the beach

Choose a Pembrokeshire beach before setting out

Match your date to the exact beach, then check the live manager page, tide and current shore signs. The restrictions here run from 1 May to 30 September. Poppit keeps a signed dog area, while Whitesands closes its full length to ordinary dogs.

What β€œdog friendly” means here

Every card links to the source for its rule and access details. County-wide β€œdog friendly” does not mean every beach is available every day. Signed seasonal zones, tide, strong currents and steep approaches can change the sensible choice.

One summer zone and one full ban

North Pembrokeshire

Poppit keeps a signed dog area through summer. Whitesands is an autumn and winter choice because its restriction covers the whole beach.

St Dogmaels, north Pembrokeshire

Poppit Sands

Poppit Sands and the Teifi estuary seen from above at low tide

Best for: A broad estuary beach that keeps a signed dog section available through summer.

The dog ruleThe western section shown red on the official map has no dogs from 1 May to 30 September. The eastern section remains available during those dates.

Lead rule
Dogs must be on leads on the promenade and in the car parks from 1 May to 30 September. From the main access, follow current signs towards the eastern, right-hand dog area.
Access
The main approach has a concrete ramp with a staggered barrier and a wooden walkway to the viewpoint. A beach wheelchair can be hired. Parking is near the RNLI station, with toilets and a cafe nearby.
Arrival
Google Maps opens the exact Poppit Sands Beach card. This is a whole-beach arrival, so use the official map and the flagpoles to find the eastern dog area in summer.
Before you go
Do not attempt to cross the Teifi estuary. The currents are strong and the incoming tide moves quickly.
Before you go
RNLI lifeguards patrol from the end of June to the beginning of September, but check live conditions and current signs before entering the water.

St Davids

Whitesands Bay

Whitesands Bay curving below Carn Llidi and rocky cliffs

Best for: A wide sandy bay for dog visits from October through April, with a car park and cafe above the beach.

The dog ruleOrdinary dogs are excluded from the entire beach from 1 May to 30 September. Outside those dates the county-wide dog welcome applies. Guide dogs are welcome all year.

Lead rule
No separate off-season beach lead rule is published. Keep dogs under close control and follow current signs around the busy surf break and coast path.
Access
A private 60-space car park sits above the beach. Toilets, a cafe and slipway are available. The concrete ramp is steep and shifting winter sand can leave a step at its base.
Arrival
Google Maps opens the exact Whitesands Bay card. Parking can fill in summer, when a seasonal Celtic Coaster shuttle runs from Oriel y Parc in St Davids.
Before you go
Choose another beach with an ordinary dog from 1 May to 30 September because the restriction covers the full length of Whitesands.
Before you go
Check the tide before visiting because the incoming water can cut visitors off. Lifeguards patrol from the end of May to the beginning of September.

Year-round Atlantic alternatives

Wild west coast

Marloes rewards a half-mile approach when the tide leaves enough sand. Freshwater West gives dogs year-round beach access beside powerful surf and fragile dunes.

Marloes Peninsula

Marloes Sands

Marloes Sands and its rocky coves seen from the clifftop

Best for: A remote low-tide expanse with rock formations, reached by a half-mile walk from the National Trust car park.

The dog ruleDogs are welcome under close control. Marloes is not named among the county beaches with a seasonal dog restriction.

Lead rule
Keep a lead with you and use a short lead around sheep, other livestock, nesting birds and wildlife. Follow local signs throughout the coast and farmland approach.
Access
The National Trust car park at SA62 3BH is half a mile from the beach. The cafe and nearest toilet are about 164 yards down the track. There are no facilities on the beach.
Arrival
Google Maps opens Marloes Sands Car Park at the manager-published postcode, not the more distant Martins Haven parking.
Before you go
The beach can disappear completely at high tide. Check the live tide table before walking towards its western coves.
Before you go
The coastline is open dawn to dusk. Parking charges apply during those hours and overnight parking or camping is not allowed.

Castlemartin coast

Freshwater West

Four dogs running together at the waterline at Freshwater West

Best for: A year-round dog beach with wide sand and a dramatic surf outlook, best treated as a shore walk rather than a swim.

The dog ruleDogs are welcome on Freshwater West beach all year under close control. Dogs are excluded from the permissive paths through Gupton Farm because of wildlife.

Lead rule
Keep dogs under close control and use a lead around wildlife or when asked. Stay on the signed beach access and public routes rather than Gupton Farm permissive trails.
Access
Two small free car parks serve the beach. Toilets are available. The easiest route is the concrete ramp beside the public toilets, although moving sand can leave a step at the bottom.
Arrival
Google Maps opens the exact Freshwater West beach card. Use the signed beach parking on the narrow coast road and keep gateways and emergency access clear.
Before you go
Strong rip currents occur here. This is a beach for experienced strong swimmers and surfers, not a place to promise safe dog swimming.
Before you go
The dunes are fragile, so camping and barbecues are not allowed. Frainslake Sands to the south is inside the Castlemartin ranges and out of bounds.

Remote bays with steep approaches

Stackpole Estate

Barafundle Bay and Broad Haven South welcome dogs all year, but both need close control around livestock and wildlife, and neither has level beach access.

Stackpole Estate

Barafundle Bay

A visitor on the wooded path above Barafundle Bay

Best for: A sheltered-feeling sandy bay for walkers able to manage the rough half-mile coast path from Stackpole Quay.

The dog ruleDogs are welcome on Barafundle Bay all year under close control.

Lead rule
Use a lead when necessary around farm animals, ponies, water birds and ground nesting birds. A short lead is essential around sheep.
Access
Walk half a mile from Stackpole Quay over rough and uneven coast path with steep steps. The route is unsuitable for wheelchairs, powered mobility vehicles and pushchairs.
Arrival
Google Maps opens Stackpole Quay, the National Trust named walking start at SA71 5LS. Pay and display parking, adapted toilets, a tea room and EV charging are at the quay.
Before you go
The beach is open dawn to dusk. Buses, coaches and campervans are not permitted at Stackpole Quay because of narrow roads.
Before you go
There are no facilities on the beach. Carry water and leave enough time and energy for the stepped walk back.

Bosherston, Stackpole Estate

Broad Haven South

Broad Haven South beach and Church Rock beyond the stream

Best for: A broad year-round dog beach for visitors who can manage steep steps or prefer the longer lily-pond approach.

The dog ruleDogs are welcome on Broad Haven South all year under close control.

Lead rule
Use a lead when necessary around farm animals, ponies, water birds and ground nesting birds. A short lead is essential around sheep.
Access
The direct route from the National Trust car park has steep steps and a steep uneven sand path. It is unsuitable for wheelchairs, mobility vehicles and pushchairs. Toilets, including an adapted toilet, are at the car park.
Arrival
Google Maps opens Broad Haven South Beach Car Park. The manager publishes SA71 5DZ and SA71 5DR for the Broad Haven South and Bosherston Lakes parking area.
Before you go
The beach is open dawn to dusk and has strong currents. Treat the exposed sand, caves and stream as tide-dependent shore features rather than safe swimming promises.
Before you go
Narrow roads exclude buses, coaches and motorhomes. Bosherston offers a roughly one-mile alternative approach through the lily ponds.

The useful short answers

Questions about dog-friendly Pembrokeshire beaches

Are Pembrokeshire beaches dog friendly all year?

Many are, but named beaches have restrictions from 1 May to 30 September. In this guide Poppit keeps a signed eastern dog area, while Whitesands excludes ordinary dogs from the whole beach during those dates. Marloes, Freshwater West, Barafundle Bay and Broad Haven South are the checked year-round alternatives.

Where can I take my dog in summer?

Use Poppit's signed eastern dog area, or choose Marloes Sands, Freshwater West, Barafundle Bay or Broad Haven South. Check the current signs and manager page before travelling. Whitesands is excluded to ordinary dogs from 1 May to 30 September.

Do dogs need to stay on a lead?

Poppit's promenade and car parks require leads from 1 May to 30 September. National Trust beaches ask for close control, a lead when necessary and a short lead around sheep. Keep dogs at least 20 metres from seals and on a short lead when seals are on land.

Which beaches are easiest to reach?

Poppit, Whitesands and Freshwater West have beach-level or ramped approaches, although sand can leave steps and barriers still matter. Marloes needs a half-mile walk. Barafundle has a rough half-mile coast path with steep steps, and Broad Haven South has steep steps and an uneven sand path.

Why is Newgale missing?

Its rule is clear: the middle third between the flagpoles excludes dogs from 1 May to 30 September while the north and south thirds remain open. It is held because Google Maps did not provide a single place-matched arrival for one permitted summer end. The generic beach pin sits close to the restricted middle.
