# Things to do in Cornwall with dogs

Last checked: 16 September 2026. Find things to do in Cornwall with dogs, with eight source-checked days out where an ordinary pet dog can join. Exclusions and practical limits are made clear.

## Valley paths, planting and a private beach

These two gardens welcome dogs throughout the visitor experience, but both require short leads and involve substantial ground.

### The Lost Gardens of Heligan

**Best for:** A full garden day with food and facilities on site

**Dog rule:** Dogs are welcome throughout the gardens all year on a short, non-extendable lead. The lead rule protects rare livestock, poultry and wildlife. Dogs on leads are also welcome in Heligan Kitchen and the Steward’s House.

**What the visit involves:** Allow enough time for woodland, productive gardens and the wider estate rather than treating Heligan as a quick stop. The operator recommends at least four hours.

**Opening:** Opening times vary by date and special events can change access, so use Heligan’s live calendar for the day you plan to visit.

**Access and facilities:** Parking, the local bus stop, toilets and food are at the entrance. There is no shaded dog parking, and dogs must not be left in vehicles.

**Arrival:** Pentewan, St Austell PL26 6EN.

**Watch for:** Use a fixed short lead rather than an extendable one, and plan for a long visit without leaving your dog in the car.

### Trebah Garden

**Best for:** A subtropical valley garden that reaches a private beach

**Dog rule:** Dogs are welcome all year throughout the garden and on the private beach, on a short lead at all times. The visitor centre, shops and a designated indoor café section also welcome dogs.

**What the visit involves:** The route drops through the valley to the Helford River, so the garden and beach form one substantial outing rather than two separate stops.

**Opening:** The garden currently opens daily from 9:30am and says no pre-booking is required. Check the live page before a special journey.

**Access and facilities:** The visitor-centre toilets are the only toilets on site. A step-free route reaches the beach, but the return climbs a steep valley and manual wheelchairs are not recommended.

**Arrival:** Mawnan Smith, Falmouth TR11 5JZ.

**Watch for:** A step-free route is still steep. Keep dogs on a short lead on the beach as well as in the garden.

## Clay country and a heritage railway

Choose an indoor and outdoor museum day, or book a regular-service steam train where the dog policy is part of the timetable decision.

### Wheal Martyn Clay Works

**Best for:** A weather-flexible mix of museum galleries and industrial trails

**Dog rule:** Dogs are welcome throughout the indoor museum, 26 acres of grounds and café. Keep them on a lead and clear up after them.

**What the visit involves:** Indoor galleries lead into historic works, waterwheels, woodland and a viewpoint over a modern clay pit. It is the most flexible wet-weather choice in this guide.

**Opening:** Wheal Martyn currently opens daily from 10am to 5pm. Check the operator page for event or holiday changes.

**Access and facilities:** Disabled parking is close to the wheelchair-accessible entrance. Outdoor trails cross historic industrial ground, so conditions differ from the indoor museum.

**Arrival:** Carthew, St Austell PL26 8XG.

**Watch for:** Plan footwear for the outdoor trail even when the museum itself is an indoor option.

### Bodmin Railway regular service

**Best for:** A book-ahead steam railway trip with a clear dog ticket

**Dog rule:** Dogs with a dog ticket are welcome on regular service trains, the station and platform. Keep them on a short lead and on the floor. Dogs cannot enter the on-train bar or food-service areas. Christmas, Murder Mystery and some other event trains do not accept ordinary dogs.

**What the visit involves:** The 2026 Circular takes about two hours and the Return about one hour. The current dog ticket is £3.50, but the right service matters more than the headline fare.

**Opening:** The railway runs dated timetables and closes on Fridays for maintenance. Choose a regular dog-permitted service before travelling.

**Access and facilities:** Bodmin General has the main visitor facilities and a limited car park of about 50 to 70 spaces.

**Arrival:** General Station, Harleigh Road, Bodmin PL31 1AQ.

**Watch for:** Do not assume a special event train follows the regular-service dog policy.

## A conservation valley or a cliff-edge castle

Both places admit ordinary pet dogs, with important exclusions at the sanctuary and strict lead control around Tintagel’s cliffs and birds.

### Cornish Seal Sanctuary

**Best for:** A conservation visit where dogs can join most of the site

**Dog rule:** Well-behaved dogs are welcome on leads across the sanctuary except inside the Seal Hospital and café. Assistance dogs may enter those excluded areas. Sheltered outdoor café seating, water bowls, waste bins and bags are provided.

**What the visit involves:** The 42-acre sanctuary is mainly outdoors. Treat it as a steep valley visit with animal viewing rather than a compact indoor attraction.

**Opening:** The sanctuary currently opens daily from 10am to 5pm, with last admission at 4pm.

**Access and facilities:** Reception to the hospital is about 600 metres, followed by another 300 metres downhill to the pools. The main car park is by reception, with toilets at reception, the hospital and puffin enclosure.

**Arrival:** Gweek, Helston TR12 6UG.

**Watch for:** Ordinary pet dogs cannot enter the Seal Hospital or café, and the steep return is part of the visit.

### Tintagel Castle

**Best for:** Cliff scenery, ruins and a dramatic bridge crossing

**Dog rule:** Dogs are welcome everywhere in the visitor attraction on leads. Keep the lead short around more than 100 steps, steep cliff edges and nesting birds. Dog water is available from the café on request.

**What the visit involves:** A timed ticket controls bridge access to the island ruins. This is a physical cliff visit, not a level castle interior.

**Opening:** In 2026 the castle is open daily from 10am to 5pm between 28 March and 24 October, with reduced winter opening published separately. High winds or bad weather can close the site.

**Access and facilities:** There is no on-site parking. Village pay-and-display car parks are about 600 metres from the visitor centre.

**Arrival:** Castle Road, Tintagel PL34 0HE.

**Watch for:** More than 100 steps, exposed cliffs and weather closures make this unsuitable for some dogs and people.

## A cliff theatre and a ferry crossing

These are distinctive short experiences rather than walks. Check the performance calendar, tides and live sailing status before leaving.

### The Minack Theatre daytime visit

**Best for:** A short, distinctive cliffside visit outside performance times

**Dog rule:** Dogs on short leads are welcome during ordinary visiting hours. Only trained assistance or service dogs may attend performances, including daytime storytelling events.

**What the visit involves:** Book a timed Theatre and Garden visit to see the open-air stage and planted cliff setting. Do not book a performance and expect the ordinary daytime dog rule to apply.

**Opening:** Visiting hours and final entry vary, and can finish early for performances. Advance booking is essential in school holidays.

**Access and facilities:** The site is steep and uneven with many steps and no step-free route to the stage or lower auditorium. Parking opens shortly before booked visits and has no shade.

**Arrival:** Porthcurno, Penzance TR19 6JU.

**Watch for:** This is a daytime visit only for ordinary dogs, with steep terrain and no shaded parking.

### St Mawes Ferry from Falmouth

**Best for:** A short boat trip or one-hour round trip without a car

**Dog rule:** Dogs are welcome and travel free on the ordinary passenger service. Carriage remains subject to the operator’s safety decision.

**What the visit involves:** The crossing to St Mawes takes about 20 minutes, or you can remain aboard for a roughly one-hour round trip.

**Opening:** The ferry runs seasonal timetables. Every sailing depends on tide, weather and operating circumstances, so check the live status on the day.

**Access and facilities:** Boarding uses steps at both ends. At low tide there can be up to about 20 steps, and they may be wet and slippery.

**Arrival:** Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth TR11 3DF.

**Watch for:** Check the exact departure pier and live status. The low-tide steps may not suit every dog or passenger.

## Questions answered

### What are the best things to do in Cornwall with a dog when it rains?

Wheal Martyn is the strongest weather-flexible choice because dogs are welcome in its indoor museum as well as across the grounds and café. Bodmin Railway can also provide shelter on a regular dog-permitted service, but special events may exclude ordinary dogs.

### Which Cornwall attractions let dogs inside?

Wheal Martyn welcomes dogs in the museum and café. Heligan welcomes dogs in Heligan Kitchen and the Steward's House, while Trebah has designated indoor café seating. The Seal Sanctuary excludes ordinary dogs from its Seal Hospital and café.

### Can dogs visit Tintagel Castle?

Yes. Dogs are welcome throughout Tintagel Castle on leads, but the route has more than 100 steps, steep cliff edges and nesting birds. Timed tickets and weather closures also matter.

### Can dogs go to a performance at the Minack Theatre?

No ordinary pet dogs may attend performances or daytime storytelling. Dogs on short leads are welcome only during normal Theatre and Garden visiting hours.

### Why are Eden Project and St Michael's Mount missing?

The Eden Project does not publish ordinary-pet access for the visitor experience. St Michael's Mount has narrow seasonal access and changing ferry and harbour conditions, so neither is presented as a straightforward dog-friendly day out here.
