# Dog-friendly beaches in Weymouth

Last checked: 16 September 2026. Six checked sections and nearby beaches, with Weymouth Bay's seasonal boundaries kept separate. The current Dorset Council dog-control order expires on 31 December 2026, so recheck the Council page for visits from 1 January 2027.

## Weymouth Bay zones

The central sands, Pavilion exercise area and shore east of Greenhill Groyne are separate choices. Match the signed boundary to your date before entering the beach.

### Weymouth central sandy beach

**Best for:** Level resort access and wide sand during the dog-friendly autumn and winter season.

**Dog rule:** Dogs are allowed from 1 October to 30 April. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are excluded between the northern edge of the signed Pavilion dog exercise area and the groyne at Greenhill.

**Lead rule:** The promenade from Pleasure Pier to Bowleaze is a dog-on-lead area at all times. The current order limits leads to 2 metres where a lead is required.

**Access:** The central beach is sandy with a gradual slope. Town car parks and toilets serve the seafront; the nearest public toilets to the main beach are by the King’s Statue. Seasonal RNLI and beach services do not operate year round.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Weymouth Beach on the Esplanade. This arrival is inside the summer exclusion section, so use it only from 1 October to 30 April when visiting with a dog.

**Before you go:** Check the live Council page and beach signs before travelling, especially for a visit from 1 January 2027 when the current order has expired. Check tide and sea conditions before entering the water, even when beach services are operating.

### Pavilion dog exercise area

**Best for:** The signed year-round dog section closest to central Weymouth and its resort facilities.

**Dog rule:** Dogs are allowed all year inside the signed exercise area beside Weymouth Pavilion. The neighbouring central sands remain excluded from 1 May to 30 September.

**Lead rule:** No separate beach lead requirement is published for the signed exercise area. Dogs must be on a lead on the promenade and in the Council car park; required leads are limited to 2 metres.

**Access:** Pavilion Car Park is open 24 hours with 120 spaces, 9 accessible bays and no height restriction. Charges apply from 8am to 6pm. The dog section is beside the Pavilion and seasonal beach matting is provided nearby from May to September.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Pavilion Car Park, not an invented dog-beach pin. From the car park, follow the shore signs into the dog exercise area and stay inside its marked boundary.

**Before you go:** The exercise area boundary matters in summer because the adjoining central beach is excluded to dogs. Recheck the Council rule for visits from 1 January 2027 because the current order expires on 31 December 2026.

### Greenhill Groyne to Overcombe

**Best for:** A year-round shingle section with a clear western boundary and parking at the Overcombe end.

**Dog rule:** Dogs are allowed all year from Greenhill Groyne east to Overcombe. From 1 May to 30 September, the adjoining beach west of the groyne is part of the exclusion zone.

**Lead rule:** The seafront promenade remains a dog-on-lead area at all times. Council car parks are also lead areas, with required leads limited to 2 metres.

**Access:** Beach Car Park on Preston Road is open 24 hours with 281 spaces and a 2.1m height restriction. Charges apply from 8am to 6pm. It has no accessible bays, while the shore here is shingle rather than central Weymouth’s sand.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Beach Car Park at the eastern end of the allowed section. Use the Greenhill groyne and current shore signs to identify the western boundary.

**Before you go:** Do not assume the all-year rule continues west of Greenhill Groyne during the summer exclusion period. Check tide, sea state and current signs before walking the shore.

## East of Weymouth

Bowleaze is the nearest all-year cove. Ringstead adds a quieter shingle bay with sand and rock pools revealed at low tide.

### Bowleaze Cove

**Best for:** The closest all-year cove beyond Weymouth Bay, with a direct road arrival at the shore.

**Dog rule:** Dorset Council lists Bowleaze Cove as open to dogs all year.

**Lead rule:** No separate beach lead condition is published for the cove. The Weymouth seafront promenade to Bowleaze is a dog-on-lead area, and an authorised officer can direct a dog onto a lead where needed.

**Access:** The named beach arrival is on Bowleaze Coveway at the cove frontage. This is a shore-level alternative to Church Ope, but beach surface and water conditions still vary with the tide.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens the exact Bowleaze Cove place card on Bowleaze Coveway, not a nearby holiday park or business.

**Before you go:** Use current signs and keep dogs under close control around other beach users and wildlife. Check the tide and sea conditions before setting out along the shoreline.

### Ringstead Bay

**Best for:** A quieter all-year shingle beach with sand and rock pools exposed at low tide.

**Dog rule:** Dorset Council lists Ringstead Beach as open to dogs all year. Visit Dorset describes dogs as allowed off lead.

**Lead rule:** The official tourism listing allows dogs off lead on the beach. Keep them under close control around wildlife, rock pools and other visitors, and follow any current signs.

**Access:** The beach-side private car park has toilets, including an accessible toilet, and an accessible path without beach matting. The separate National Trust upper car park has a vehicle-height restriction and requires a long walk down.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Ringstead Bay Car Park beside the beach. It avoids the broad bay pin and the National Trust upper car park.

**Before you go:** There is no lifeguard service. Sand and rock pools appear at low tide, so check the tide before choosing this beach for a longer visit.

## Portland cove

Church Ope Cove gives dogs year-round access, but its long, steep stepped approach rules it out for many visitors.

### Church Ope Cove

**Best for:** A secluded Portland cove for fit visitors and dogs comfortable with a steep stepped approach.

**Dog rule:** Dorset Council lists Church Ope Cove as open to dogs all year.

**Lead rule:** The Council does not publish a separate beach lead condition for the cove. Keep dogs on a short lead for the steep approach and under close control around cliff wildlife and other visitors.

**Access:** The cove is reached by steep steps and has no level beach access. Parking is away from the shore and limited, so this is not an accessible alternative to Weymouth’s level seafront sections.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens the exact Church Ope Cove place card on Pennsylvania Road. The card records no wheelchair-accessible entrance, matching the stepped descent.

**Before you go:** Save enough energy for the climb back and avoid the steps when they are wet or slippery. Check tide and sea conditions before descending because there is no easy road-level retreat from the beach.

## Questions about dog-friendly Weymouth beaches

### Can dogs go on Weymouth Beach all year?

Only in the signed Pavilion dog exercise area and from Greenhill Groyne east to Overcombe. The central sandy beach is open to dogs from 1 October to 30 April and excluded from 1 May to 30 September.

### Where should I go in summer with a dog?

Use the signed Pavilion exercise area, the shore from Greenhill Groyne to Overcombe, Bowleaze Cove, Ringstead Bay or Church Ope Cove. All are listed for year-round dog access, but their surfaces and access routes differ.

### Do dogs need to stay on a lead?

The promenade from Pleasure Pier to Bowleaze and Council-owned car parks are lead areas at all times. Ringstead's official tourism listing says dogs may be off lead on the beach. Elsewhere, use the current signs and keep dogs under close control.

### Will these rules still apply in 2027?

The current Dorset Council Dog Related Public Spaces Protection Order expires on 31 December 2026. The Council had not published its replacement when this guide was checked, so visitors from 1 January 2027 must recheck the live Council beach page.

### Why are some nearby beaches missing?

Preston Beach is not a separate card because its Maps listing was marked as possibly closed; the Greenhill to Overcombe card uses verified Beach Car Park instead. Chesil has complex section rules, while Castle Cove, Newton's Cove and Sandsfoot lack a current exact ordinary-dog rule on the Council beach list.
