# Dog-friendly beaches in Scarborough

Last checked: 16 September 2026. Five checked choices around Scarborough, grouped by exact summer rule, access and tide conditions.

## Scarborough bays

Both town beaches have a precisely bounded ban from 1 May to 30 September, plus beach beyond the restricted line and separate promenade lead rules.

### Scarborough North Bay

**Best for:** A sandy town beach with a signed summer bathing zone and a dog-walking section towards Scalby Mills.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September inclusive, dogs are prohibited from the northernmost slipway at The Sands, the former Corner Café, to the northernmost slipway at the end of the chalet run on the former chair-lift bulge.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on a lead on the promenade from Scalby Mills Road to The Sands all year. The council can also direct a dog onto a lead where needed to prevent nuisance or disturbance.

**Access:** The council lists toilets, first aid, a lost-child centre, cafes, chalets and a slipway. Royal Albert Drive and the council Scalby Mills and Northstead car parks serve different parts of the bay.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens the named North Bay Beach place card. In summer, use the council map and boundary signs before choosing sand outside the restricted section.

**Before you go:** North Bay is exposed to surf, and the council lists lifeguard cover without guaranteeing daily operating times. The dog restriction applies to the named beach section; the promenade has its own year-round lead rule.

### Scarborough South Bay

**Best for:** Resort facilities outside the summer ban, with year-round dog access south of the signed underground-car-park boundary.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September inclusive, dogs are prohibited from West Pier to the line from the southernmost beach steps at the Foreshore Road roundabout beside the underground car park.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on a lead on the promenade from the steps opposite the north end of the Spa to the south end of the Spa Cliff Lift all year.

**Access:** The council lists toilets, disabled facilities, first aid, a lost-child centre, cafes, shops and a slipway. South Bay Underground and Spa Drive are council car parks near the southern section.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens the named South Bay Beach place card. The central arrival is inside the summer restriction, so continue beyond the signed southern line when visiting with a dog.

**Before you go:** Visit North Yorkshire says to check tide times before using Scarborough’s dog-friendly beach sections. The council lists lifeguard cover but does not promise it for every visit.

## South of Scarborough

Cayton is the simplest all-year option. Filey has a central summer ban with long dog-friendly sections at both ends.

### Cayton Bay

**Best for:** A broad sandy bay with year-round dog access and a quieter feel.

**Dog rule:** Visit North Yorkshire says there are no dog restrictions at Cayton Bay and dogs are allowed all year.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs under close control around surfers, cliff paths and wildlife. The council can direct a dog onto a lead to prevent nuisance or disturbance.

**Access:** The main route is a steep path and steps from the cliff top and is unsuitable for wheelchairs or limited mobility. Toilets open 8am to 9pm from 1 April to 31 October and 8am to 6pm from 1 November to 31 March.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens the exact Cayton Bay Beach place result at the council beach coordinates, avoiding the separate Cayton Bay and holiday-park results.

**Before you go:** North Yorkshire Council lists no lifeguard service, so do not treat this as a patrolled beach. Keep away from the cliffs, and check the tide because the usable beach narrows on an incoming tide.

### Filey Beach

**Best for:** Long year-round dog sections towards Filey Brigg or Hunmanby Gap when the central summer beach is restricted.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September inclusive, dogs are prohibited from the southernmost point of the Royal Parade sea wall to the northern side of the Coble Landing slipway. Dogs can use the sections north towards Filey Brigg and south towards Hunmanby Gap.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on a lead on the central promenade between Coble Landing and the southern end of the Royal Parade sea wall all year.

**Access:** Visit North Yorkshire identifies ramps and slipways, West Avenue and Country Park parking, pay-on-entry toilets and a Changing Places toilet. The council lists seasonal lifeguard cover on the main beach.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Filey Beach at the central shore. In summer, follow the boundary signs north towards Filey Brigg or south beyond Royal Parade before entering the sand with a dog.

**Before you go:** Visit North Yorkshire warns that you can be cut off by the tide near Filey Brigg. The central promenade lead rule still applies while walking to an unrestricted end.

## North of Scarborough

Robin Hood's Bay allows dogs all year, but the steep village approach and fast-closing beach route need advance planning.

### Robin Hood's Bay

**Best for:** A year-round sand-and-rock shore below a historic village, for visitors ready for the steep walk.

**Dog rule:** North Yorkshire Council lists dogs allowed and includes Robin Hood’s Bay in its current dog-friendly beach directory. It is not named in the seasonal beach prohibition.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs under close control in the narrow village, around rock pools and near wildlife. Use a lead if directed by an authorised council officer.

**Access:** Park at the council Bank Top or Station car park. North York Moors National Park Authority says not to drive below the village roundabout; the walk to the beach and back is steep. The council lists toilets and no lifeguard service.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Robin Hood’s Bay and Beach at the lower village shore, not a similarly named business. Parking stays at the top of the village.

**Before you go:** The National Park says the beach route to Boggle Hole is unavailable for three hours either side of high tide. There is no lifeguard service, and rocks can be slippery as the tide turns.

## Questions about dog-friendly Scarborough beaches

### Are Scarborough beaches dog friendly all year?

Cayton Bay and Robin Hood's Bay are the clearest all-year choices in this guide. North Bay, South Bay and Filey have restricted central sections from 1 May to 30 September, with other beach sections still available to dogs.

### Which choices work best during the summer restrictions?

Cayton Bay has no seasonal dog restriction. Robin Hood's Bay also allows dogs all year, but has a steep approach. At Filey, the long sections towards Filey Brigg and Hunmanby Gap remain available beyond the central signed zone.

### Do I need to check the tide?

Yes. Check the tide before using South Bay, take care not to be cut off near Filey Brigg, and remember the route from Robin Hood's Bay to Boggle Hole is unavailable for three hours either side of high tide.

### Why are other Scarborough beaches missing?

Cornelian Bay is held because no current council or land manager source confirms both dog access and a maintained beach descent. Reighton Sands is held because Google Maps resolves to a reef or a holiday park rather than one exact public beach arrival.
