# Dog-friendly beaches in Kent

Last checked: 16 September 2026. Eight checked choices in Thanet and Swale, grouped by exact summer rule, access and tide conditions. This is an intentionally scoped east and north Kent guide rather than a claim to cover the whole county.

## Isle of Sheppey

One unrestricted shingle bank and two precisely bounded summer bathing zones, with exposed-coast conditions and parking set out before you travel.

### Minster Shingle Bank Beach

**Best for:** A year-round dog walk beside the water-sports launch area, without the neighbouring bathing-beach ban.

**Dog rule:** Visit Swale says dogs are not banned on Minster Shingle Bank Beach.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs under control and clear up immediately. Give launching watercraft and other shared-path users room.

**Access:** Vehicle access uses the ramp opposite Minster Windsurfing Academy. Parking is available on the shingle bank at ME12 2FD, but vehicles wider than 2.3 metres are prohibited.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Minster Shingle Bank Windsurfing Beach on Marine Parade, the named beach beside the official vehicle ramp.

**Before you go:** There is no lifeguard service on this beach; the adjacent Minster Leas service is seasonal. The narrow route behind the shingle is shared by people walking and cycling.

### Minster Leas Beach

**Best for:** A long sand-and-shingle beach outside its clearly marked summer bathing zone.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are prohibited between the east side of the lifeguard station opposite The Playa and the west side of the vehicle ramp opposite the Little Oyster Café at 4 Sea Side Avenue.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs under control and use the marked dog-walking stretch. For a simpler year-round option, use adjacent Minster Shingle Bank Beach.

**Access:** The official visitor page identifies a 50-space car park at ME12 2NL, free road parking and a second car park about 200 metres away at ME12 2LT. Steps and ramps connect the promenade and beach.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Minster Leas Beach at ME12 2NL. Check the two boundary markers before choosing a beach section in summer.

**Before you go:** The retreating tide exposes a wide mix of sand, shingle and mud. Visit Swale currently says there is no lifeguard service at Minster Leas.

### Leysdown Beach

**Best for:** A resort beach outside the signed summer bathing section or outside the restriction season.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are prohibited from the line level with Stokes Amusements eastwards to the line level with the beach steps opposite the small roundabout at the seaward end of The Promenade road.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs under control. Use Minster Shingle Bank Beach when you want a clearly unrestricted summer choice rather than navigating the Leysdown boundary.

**Access:** The nearest public car park has 269 spaces and is about 200 metres from the beach at ME12 4QB. Steps and ramps with handrails descend from the promenade.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Leysdown Beach at The Promenade, ME12 4QB, beside the restricted bathing section. Read the boundary signs before entering the sand.

**Before you go:** Wind, tide and adverse weather can change exposed Sheppey beach conditions quickly. The official page lists seasonal toilets and seasonal RNLI cover; do not assume either is operating.

## Broadstairs bays

A timed summer restriction at Botany Bay, with Kingsgate and Dumpton Gap as all-year dog alternatives reached by steep steps or slopes.

### Botany Bay

**Best for:** Chalk stacks and sand outside the summer daytime dog-ban window.

**Dog rule:** Dogs are not allowed between 10am and 6pm from 1 May to 30 September. They can use the beach outside those hours and dates.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on a lead on the promenade. Keep to signed paths and use a short lead when wildlife signs ask you to.

**Access:** Beach access is by steps or a steep slope. Visit Kent advises parking at Palm Bay Avenue, CT9 3PP, then walking along the clifftop because parking by Botany Bay is very limited.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens the named Botany Bay Beach place card on Marine Drive. It identifies the beach, not the separate kiosk or walking-trail result.

**Before you go:** The ends of the bay can be cut off at high tide. Keep away from the chalk cliff base and stacks because of rockfall risk.

### Kingsgate Bay

**Best for:** A secluded sandy bay where dogs are allowed throughout the year.

**Dog rule:** Thanet District Council lists Kingsgate Bay as dog friendly at all times, all year round.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on a lead on the promenade. Keep them close around the steps, cliffs and any signed wildlife area.

**Access:** The only beach access is by steep steps. The Council says there are no public toilets at the bay and parking at the Captain Digby should be checked with the business in advance.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Kingsgate Bay Beach on Whiteness Road, the named bay reached by the steep steps.

**Before you go:** Do not walk through Kingsgate Arch because the chalk is fragile and susceptible to falls. There are no public facilities at the bay.

### Dumpton Gap

**Best for:** A year-round sandy dog walk with a low-tide route towards Ramsgate.

**Dog rule:** Thanet District Council lists Dumpton Gap as dog friendly at all times, all year round.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on a lead on the promenade. Use close control around the steep access slope and cliff edges.

**Access:** A steep slope descends from Dumpton Gap Road. The Council identifies free on-street parking, a seasonal café and seasonal toilets.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Dumpton Gap at CT10 1TD, matching the official Dumpton Gap Road approach.

**Before you go:** The beach walk to Ramsgate is available only at low tide; check tide times before committing. Stay away from unprotected chalk cliff sections because recent falls are possible.

## Margate bays

Palm Bay remains available all year, while Walpole Bay changes to a daytime lead rule through the summer season.

### Palm Bay

**Best for:** A quieter all-year dog beach when nearby resort bays have summer limits.

**Dog rule:** Thanet District Council lists Palm Bay as dog friendly at all times, all year round.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on a lead on the promenade. Keep to paths and use a short lead when nesting-bird or other wildlife signs ask you to.

**Access:** The sandy bay is reached by two steep slopes. The Council identifies on-street parking but says there are no public facilities within walking distance.

**Arrival:** Google Maps opens Palm Bay Beach on the Promenade at CT9 3DQ, beside the signed beach approaches.

**Before you go:** At high tide there can be very little sand visible. The chalk reef is exposed at low tide; check footing and tide before walking far along the shore.

### Walpole Bay

**Best for:** A summer beach visit where dogs can remain on the beach on a lead during the daytime restriction.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, dogs must be kept on a lead between 10am and 6pm. Outside that window, the beach has no seasonal dog exclusion.

**Lead rule:** Use a lead from 10am to 6pm in the summer restriction period. Dogs must also be on a lead on the promenade.

**Access:** Visit Kent says there is no on-site parking. Use free spaces on nearby clifftop roads or Lido Car Park at CT9 1RX. The page records disabled access to the beach.

**Arrival:** The verified Google Maps result is Walpole Bay itself at 51.3924055, 1.4006033, not the separate tidal-pool or hotel result.

**Before you go:** The chalk reef and tidal pool change the usable shore with the tide. Thanet asks visitors to protect nesting birds, keep to paths and use a short lead when signed.

## Questions about dog-friendly beaches in Kent

### Are Kent beaches dog friendly all year?

There is no county-wide rule. Minster Shingle Bank, Kingsgate Bay, Dumpton Gap and Palm Bay are the clearest all-year choices in this guide. Other beaches have a summer ban or lead window, so use each card's dates, times and boundaries.

### Which choices work best during the summer restrictions?

Minster Shingle Bank is not covered by the neighbouring bathing-beach ban. Thanet lists Kingsgate Bay, Dumpton Gap and Palm Bay as dog friendly all year. Walpole Bay remains available between 10am and 6pm from 1 May to 30 September, but dogs must be on a lead.

### Do I need to check the tide?

Yes. Botany Bay's ends can be cut off at high tide, the Dumpton Gap walk towards Ramsgate is a low-tide route, and Palm Bay can have very little sand at high tide. Sheppey's exposed beaches also change substantially with wind and tide.

### Why are other Kent beaches missing?

This guide covers the Thanet and Swale beaches for which the comparison brief and current council sources support a maintainable decision guide. Beaches managed by other Kent authorities need their own source and arrival audit before inclusion.
