# Dog-friendly beaches on the Isle of Wight

Last checked: 16 September 2026. Eight island beach choices with named dog sections, seasonal boundaries and practical arrival details.

## West Wight

A National Trust coastal section, a bay with no seasonal exclusion, and Colwell's east-of-slipway permission cover three different west-side approaches.

### Compton Bay, Hanover Point to Brook Chine

**Best for:** An all-year National Trust stretch with dog bins and water at Hanover Point.

**Dog rule:** National Trust welcomes dogs on the beach between Hanover Point and Brook Chine all year. Dogs are not permitted west of Compton Bay car park from 15 May to 15 September.

**Lead rule:** National Trust asks visitors to use a short lead. This is especially important around livestock on the downs; keep dogs under close control throughout.

**Access:** Hanover Point car park has toilets, baby-change facilities, an accessible toilet and a Changing Places cubicle. Beach access at Hanover and Brook is via short flights of steps with handrails.

**Arrival:** Use Hanover Point National Trust car park, then enter the beach towards Brook Chine. The permitted stretch is east of the car park, not the western Compton Bay section.

**Before you go:** The beach shelf is shallow but National Trust warns that strong surf and currents can occur depending on weather. This is a named all-year stretch inside a beach with a separate 15 May to 15 September exclusion.

### Totland Bay

**Best for:** A west-side bay with no seasonal dog exclusion and a sea-wall walk when the tide covers the sand.

**Dog rule:** The Isle of Wight Council's current all-year beach article says Totland Bay has no seasonal dog exclusion zone.

**Lead rule:** No beach-specific lead rule is published in the Council article. Keep dogs controlled and follow local signs and the Council's all-road lead rule when approaching along public roads.

**Access:** The Beach has public toilets and limited seafront parking. Visit Isle of Wight advises parking at the top and walking down in summer because the narrow seafront road is busy.

**Arrival:** Use Totland Bay Beach, then approach down Madeira Road or from the village. The named bay is the arrival, rather than a parking space on the narrow seafront road.

**Before you go:** The beach can disappear at high tide. Check tides before travelling. Parking at the seafront is limited in summer.

### Colwell Bay, east of the slipway

**Best for:** A sheltered bay when you can identify the east-of-slipway all-year section.

**Dog rule:** The Isle of Wight Council says the beach east of the slipway at Colwell Bay welcomes dogs all year, while the restriction is west of the slipway.

**Lead rule:** No beach-specific lead rule is stated in the Council all-year article. Keep dogs controlled and follow the current PSPO map and signs.

**Access:** Colwell Chine Road leads to a sizeable car park with toilets and good disabled access. The beach has sand and shingle, and the sea wall links towards Totland.

**Arrival:** Use Colwell Bay Beach, then identify the slipway and stay on its eastern side. Do not rely on the broad beach pin as the legal boundary.

**Before you go:** There is little beach at high tide, according to Visit Isle of Wight. The permitted side is a defined east-of-slipway section, not the whole bay.

## South-coast coves

Two all-year, foot-access coves for walkers who prefer a quieter south-coast stop to a resort beach.

### Steephill Cove

**Best for:** A small all-year cove for walkers comfortable with a footpath approach.

**Dog rule:** The Isle of Wight Council's April 2026 all-year beach article includes Steephill Cove among its beaches with no seasonal dog exclusion zone.

**Lead rule:** Dogs are welcome on leads during the day and may run free after 18:00, according to current local beach guidance. Check the privately managed cove’s signs on arrival.

**Access:** Steephill Cove has no road access. Visit Isle of Wight describes a short coastal-path walk from Ventnor Esplanade, or a steeper descent via Love Lane past Ventnor cricket club.

**Arrival:** Use Steephill Cove as the named arrival, then approach on foot from Ventnor Esplanade or Love Lane. Do not navigate to the cove expecting roadside parking.

**Before you go:** This is a foot-access cove with steps or a steep descent. Cafes and restaurants in the cove can be closed out of season.

### Monks Bay, Bonchurch

**Best for:** A quiet all-year Bonchurch shore away from the main resort seafronts.

**Dog rule:** The Isle of Wight Council’s April 2026 all-year beach article includes Bonchurch among its beaches with no seasonal dog exclusion zone.

**Lead rule:** No beach-specific lead rule is published with the all-year statement. Keep dogs controlled and follow signs on the approach.

**Access:** Monks Bay is reached from Shore Road in Bonchurch. The Isle of Wight tourism listing describes a small car park on Shore Road followed by a short walk to the beach. Council records also identify Shore Road as the access route.

**Arrival:** Use Monks Bay Beach as the named arrival, then approach down Shore Road from Bonchurch. Do not use the landslip paths from Shanklin as an approach.

**Before you go:** Use the Shore Road approach and check local path conditions. The Bonchurch Landslip area has continuing land movement and closures. This is a quiet, unserviced shore rather than a resort beach.

## East and north-east

These three named year-round sections keep the Sandown Bay and Ryde restrictions separate from the permitted sand.

### Yaverland Beach, east of the car park

**Best for:** Long low-tide sands in the named eastern all-year section.

**Dog rule:** The Isle of Wight Council says dogs can be walked all year east of the Yaverland car park. A separate PSPO exclusion area applies elsewhere on Yaverland Beach between 1 May and 30 September.

**Lead rule:** No beach-specific lead rule is stated in the Council all-year article. Keep dogs controlled and follow the PSPO map and beach signage.

**Access:** Yaverland Road has a large car park, beach shop, cafe and public toilets. Visit Isle of Wight says the beach expands widely at low tide but has little beach at high tide.

**Arrival:** Use Yaverland Beach car park, then select the eastern permitted section and check the Council exclusion map before going onto the sand.

**Before you go:** The all-year dog area is east of the car park, not the whole broad beach. Check tide tables because high tide leaves little beach.

### Appley Beach, east of Appley Tower

**Best for:** A Ryde beach walk using Appley Tower as the all-year boundary.

**Dog rule:** The Isle of Wight Council says dogs can be walked all year east of Appley Tower, while exclusions apply on the main Ryde seafront during the 1 May to 30 September period.

**Lead rule:** The Council says dogs must be on leads on public roads, including Appley Walk and Garden Walk along the seafront. Follow beach signs once on the sand.

**Access:** Appley Park and Puckpool Park have Council car parks. Public toilets are available in Appley Park. The beach is a short walk from the park.

**Arrival:** Use Appley Tower as the named arrival, then move east along the beach before allowing a dog onto the all-year section. The Tower is the published boundary, not a whole-Appley permission.

**Before you go:** Keep dogs on leads while using Appley Walk and Garden Walk. The permitted sand begins east of the Tower.

### Ryde Beach, west of the pier

**Best for:** The western side of Ryde Pier, separate from the summer esplanade exclusion zones.

**Dog rule:** The Isle of Wight Council says dogs can be walked all year west of Ryde Pier, while the main esplanade has summer exclusion zones.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on leads on public roads, including pavements and verges. Follow current PSPO signs on the seafront approach.

**Access:** Visit Isle of Wight identifies a small sandy beach a few steps west of Ryde Pier, convenient for the all-year west-of-pier section.

**Arrival:** Use Ryde Pier as the named boundary landmark, then take the small beach a few steps to its west. The broad Ryde Beach pin does not establish a summer dog area by itself.

**Before you go:** The all-year section is west of the pier, separate from the main esplanade exclusion zones. Check the PSPO map and signs before selecting a spot.

## Questions about dog-friendly Isle of Wight beaches

### Which Isle of Wight beaches allow dogs all year?

This guide includes all-year choices at Totland, Steephill Cove and Monks Bay, plus named sections at Compton, Colwell, Yaverland, Appley and Ryde. Use the exact section on each card.

### Are the Island’s beach dog restrictions on the same dates?

Most Council beach exclusion zones run from 1 May to 30 September, but Compton’s National Trust restriction west of its car park runs from 15 May to 15 September. Read the linked rule and signs for the beach section you choose.

### Why do several cards use landmarks such as Appley Tower or Ryde Pier?

Those landmarks define published all-year sections. A town or beach name alone can include a separate summer exclusion zone.

### Which tide checks matter?

Totland and Colwell have little beach at high tide. At Compton, weather can bring strong surf and currents. Check tides, conditions and local notices before heading down.
