## West Dorset shingle

Cogden and Eype are all-year Dorset Council choices, with Cogden's steep shelf and the National Trust's countryside controls adding the useful difference.

### Cogden Beach

**Best for:** A quieter west-Dorset shingle walk with a year-round dog welcome.

**Dog rule:** Dorset Council lists Cogden Beach as available to dogs all year round.

**Lead rule:** National Trust asks for leads near livestock and close control during the March to July ground-nesting-bird period.

**Access:** National Trust identifies the Cogden car park, DT6 4RL, with a footpath across fields to the beach. It notes moderate slopes, gates and potentially muddy ground in winter.

**Arrival:** Use the named Cogden Beach arrival point, then follow the signed footpath from Cogden car park.

**Before you go:** The shingle shelves steeply and Visit Dorset warns of strong undertow and sudden waves. There is no lifeguard cover at Cogden, according to Visit Dorset.

### Eype Beach

**Best for:** A west-coast beach walk with your dog throughout the year.

**Dog rule:** Dorset Council lists Eype Beach as available to dogs all year round.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs controlled and follow local cliff and path signs.

**Access:** Visit Dorset describes a small car park reached by a single-track lane, steep steps down to the shingle, and an A35 rest-area alternative followed by a 15-minute walk. It lists no public toilets or lifeguard.

**Arrival:** Use the named Eype Beach arrival point, and use the A35 rest-area walk if the single-track approach is unsuitable or busy.

**Before you go:** The shingle shelves steeply with strong undertow and sudden waves; stay away from rockfall-prone cliffs. The steps are steep and there is no wheelchair access to the beach.

## Jurassic Coast and Purbeck

Durdle Door and Lulworth bring steep or defined access, while Studland is the long beach where seasonal lead and wildlife rules matter.

### Durdle Door

**Best for:** An iconic coastal outing for dogs and people comfortable with a steep beach approach.

**Dog rule:** Dorset Council lists Durdle Door as available to dogs all year round.

**Lead rule:** Lulworth Estate asks walkers to use leads where livestock are present and in the March to July bird-nesting season.

**Access:** Allow about 15 minutes for the steep descent from the cliff-top car park, with steps down to the shingle. The route is not step-free. Toilets and refreshment kiosks are by the car park.

**Arrival:** Use the named Durdle Door arrival point and follow the signed cliff-top car-park route.

**Before you go:** The descent and return are steep; wear suitable footwear. Take care near crumbling cliffs and keep dogs close around livestock and nesting birds.

### Lulworth Cove, left of the slipway

**Best for:** A sheltered-cove visit using the dog-permitted side of the slipway.

**Dog rule:** Dorset Council lists Lulworth Cove as all-year dog access. Lulworth Estate directs dogs to the left-hand side of the slipway, so this recommendation names that defined beach section.

**Lead rule:** Lulworth Estate asks walkers to use leads where livestock are present and in the March to July bird-nesting season.

**Access:** Walk from the Lulworth Cove pay-and-display car park to the pebble beach. The car park has a chalky gravel surface; follow the Estate signs to the permitted section beside the slipway.

**Arrival:** Use the named Lulworth Cove arrival point, then choose the left-hand side of the slipway as directed by the Estate and follow on-site signs.

**Before you go:** The recommendation is the left-of-slipway section, not a claim about every part of the cove. Check the tide before exploring the rock pools, and allow for uneven pebble ground.

### Studland Bay

**Best for:** A sandy dog walk with clear seasonal lead rules and a Knoll Beach arrival.

**Dog rule:** Dogs are welcome all year on Shell, Knoll, Middle and South beaches. From 1 May to 30 September, use a lead shorter than 2 metres. From 1 October to 30 April, dogs may be off lead under close control.

**Lead rule:** In the dunes and heathland, leads are required from 1 March to 31 July. Keep dogs under close control throughout the reserve, and do not let them enter Little Sea.

**Access:** National Trust identifies toilets at Knoll, Middle and Shell Bay car parks, a café at Knoll, water bowls opposite the café and a beach wheelchair at Knoll by booking. Terrain is mixed and uneven.

**Arrival:** Use the named Knoll Beach, Studland arrival point and follow the Trust's dog-zone signs for the beach and reserve.

**Before you go:** Beach, dunes and heathland have different lead periods. Dogs may swim in the sea off lead all year only under close control; do not let them enter Little Sea.

## Poole and Christchurch edge

Three BCP choices with exact year-round dog zones, resort restrictions nearby and different arrival plans.

### Sandbanks western dog area

**Best for:** A year-round dog walk in the permitted western part of Sandbanks.

**Dog rule:** BCP identifies a designated all-year dog-friendly beach area at the western end of Sandbanks promenade to Haven Point, near the chain ferry. From 1 May to 30 September dogs are not allowed on Sandbanks main beach.

**Lead rule:** BCP requires dogs on leads on the promenade and paths at all times.

**Access:** BCP lists Sandbanks surface car park, toilets, café, drinking water, showers and a beach ramp. It provides Mobi-Mat access from May to September.

**Arrival:** Use the named Sandbanks Beach arrival point, then follow signs west towards Haven Point rather than entering the seasonal main-beach zone.

**Before you go:** The permitted place is a defined western zone, not the whole Sandbanks beach. Promenade and path lead rule applies all year.

### Hengistbury Head Beach

**Best for:** A coastal walk with separate rules for the beach and wildlife reserve.

**Dog rule:** BCP lists Hengistbury Head among beaches where dogs can be walked all year round.

**Lead rule:** BCP's beach page asks visitors to keep dogs on a lead when off the beach so wildlife in the nature reserve is not disturbed. Its reserve page asks for close control around grazing cattle.

**Access:** BCP lists Hengistbury Head car park, toilets and cafés. The visitor centre is a five-minute flat walk from the main car park.

**Arrival:** Use the named Hengistbury Head Beach arrival point, then follow reserve paths and beach signs.

**Before you go:** It is a nature reserve: keep dogs on lead off the beach and under close control around grazing animals. Barbecues are prohibited on the Head and its beaches.

### Mudeford Sandbank

**Best for:** A sandy dog outing on the sandbank, with the approach planned in advance.

**Dog rule:** BCP lists Mudeford Sandbank as an all-year dog-walking beach.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs controlled and follow ferry, harbour and beach signage.

**Access:** From Hengistbury Head car park, follow the level walk of about one mile to the Sandbank. A seasonal land train is another option. Alternatively, take the ferry from Mudeford Quay; its operator allows well-behaved dogs on leads.

**Arrival:** Use Hengistbury Head car park for the public level walk or seasonal land train. Mudeford Quay and the ferry are an alternative water arrival.

**Before you go:** Check current land-train or ferry operation if relying on either service. The public walking route is a separate option. Mudeford Quay is across the harbour entrance. Choose Hengistbury Head car park for the land approach.

## Questions about dog-friendly beaches in Dorset

### Can I take my dog to Sandbanks throughout the summer?

Use the designated western dog area towards Haven Point. Dogs are prohibited on the main Sandbanks beach from 1 May to 30 September. Keep them on a lead on promenades and paths and follow the signed boundary.

### What are the lead rules at Studland?

Dogs are welcome on the beaches all year. From 1 May to 30 September, use a lead shorter than 2 metres on the beach. The heathland and dunes have a separate lead period from 1 March to 31 July to protect nesting birds.

### Where are dogs permitted at Lulworth Cove?

Lulworth Estate identifies the permitted beach area as the left-hand side of the slipway. Check the signs at the slipway before choosing a spot, rather than assuming the whole cove has the same rule.

### Which visits need extra access planning?

Durdle Door has a steep approach and steps. Cogden and Eype are shingle beaches, and Mudeford Sandbank needs a planned walk or transport connection. Check the individual card, tides, weather and current access before setting out.
