Our [guide to dog-friendly beaches in Dorset](/guides/dog-friendly-beaches-dorset) also covers West Dorset and the Jurassic Coast.

## Poole and west Bournemouth

Sandbanks and the Council-mapped Chine strips are distinct year-round choices. The surrounding resort beaches are not automatically included.

### Sandbanks western dog area

**Best for:** A summer beach walk where the all-year zone is separate from Sandbanks main beach.

**Dog rule:** The all-year dog area is the western end of Sandbanks promenade to Haven Point by the chain ferry. Dogs are not allowed on Sandbanks main beach from 1 May to 30 September.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on leads on the promenade and paths at all times.

**Access:** Sandbanks has surface parking, toilets, café, drinking water, showers and a beach ramp. Mobi-Mat access is available from May to September.

**Arrival:** Use Sandbanks Beach, then follow signs west towards Haven Point. The broad beach pin does not identify the permitted section by itself.

**Before you go:** This is a defined western zone, not the whole beach. The promenade lead rule applies in every season.

### Alum Chine to Branksome dog zone

**Best for:** An all-year sandy stretch west of Alum Chine with a map-defined boundary.

**Dog rule:** BCP permits dogs all year on the western side of Alum Chine to Branksome Chine Beach Office, Poole.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on leads on the promenade, paths and zig zags at all times.

**Access:** Alum Chine has toilets, a dog wash and nearby parking, according to BCP’s visitor page.

**Arrival:** Use Alum Chine Beach, then join the beach on its western side and follow the Council green-zone map towards Branksome Chine Beach Office.

**Before you go:** The eastern part of Alum Chine is not covered by this all-year permission. Use the Council map and beach signs to remain inside the zone.

### Middle Chine to Durley dog zone

**Best for:** A central west-Bournemouth summer option with facilities at Durley Chine.

**Dog rule:** BCP permits dogs all year between Middle Chine and Durley Chine. Durley Chine’s main beach is otherwise a no-dogs area from 1 May to 30 September.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on leads on the promenade, paths and zig zags at all times.

**Access:** Durley Chine has a car park, toilets, accessible toilets, showers, drinking water, café and beach office. The Environmental Hub is 100 metres east of the car park; its accessibility ramp is west of the building.

**Arrival:** Use Durley Chine Beach, then use the Council map to stay on the Middle Chine to Durley section rather than entering the seasonal main beach.

**Before you go:** The all-year rule applies to the named stretch, not Durley Chine’s whole main beach. The promenade lead rule still applies.

## East Bournemouth and Hengistbury

Choose between the defined Fisherman’s Walk section, a nature-reserve beach and the harbour-mouth sandbank with its own land approach.

### Fisherman’s Walk to Southbourne dog zone

**Best for:** A year-round eastern Bournemouth section reached through Fisherman’s Walk.

**Dog rule:** BCP permits dogs all year east of Fisherman’s Walk beach to Southbourne. Southbourne’s main beach remains seasonally restricted from 1 May to 30 September.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on leads on the promenade, paths and zig zags at all times.

**Access:** Fisherman’s Walk has toilets at its north end and can be reached from Southbourne town or the clifftop side. Southbourne beach is accessed from the high street through Fisherman’s Walk.

**Arrival:** The map opens Woodside Road Car Park, which BCP lists for Fisherman's Walk beach. Walk to the Fisherman's Walk beach approach, then check the signed permitted section east of Fisherman's Walk. The car park is inland, not a dog-zone marker.

**Before you go:** The year-round permission starts east of Fisherman’s Walk. Follow the zone map and beach signs before choosing a spot. The permitted section is separate from Hengistbury Head; do not assume every intervening beach is dog-friendly in summer.

### Hengistbury Head Beach

**Best for:** An all-year beach walk combined with reserve paths, for dogs comfortable around wildlife controls.

**Dog rule:** BCP lists Hengistbury Head as an all-year dog-walking beach.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs on leads when off the beach because Hengistbury Head is a nature reserve. Keep close control around grazing cattle.

**Access:** The main car park has toilets and cafés. The visitor centre is a five-minute flat walk from the car park.

**Arrival:** Use Hengistbury Head Beach, then follow reserve paths and beach signs.

**Before you go:** It is a nature reserve, so the off-beach lead rule is material. Barbecues are prohibited on the Head and its beaches.

### Mudeford Sandbank

**Best for:** An all-year sandbank beach reached on foot from Hengistbury Head.

**Dog rule:** BCP lists Mudeford Sandbank as an all-year dog-walking beach.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs on leads on the reserve paths from Hengistbury Head and on promenades or footpaths. Follow ferry operator rules if arriving by boat.

**Access:** Visit Dorset describes a level walk of about one mile from Hengistbury Head car park. A seasonal land train and the Mudeford ferry are alternatives, subject to operation.

**Arrival:** For the public land approach, start at Hengistbury Head car park and follow the level route to the Sandbank. Mudeford Quay is a separate harbour-side ferry departure, not the land approach.

**Before you go:** Check land-train or ferry operation if relying on either service. Choose Hengistbury Head for the walking approach.

## Christchurch and Highcliffe

At these eastern beaches, the wave wall and numbered groynes define the usable summer section, so use the Council map on arrival.

### Friars Cliff dog zone, wave wall to Groyne H4

**Best for:** A bounded summer dog section west of the Highcliffe restriction.

**Dog rule:** BCP’s year-round dog area at Friars Cliff is only the section between the wave wall and Groyne H4 at Highcliffe Beach.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be on leads on the promenade, paths and zig zags at all times.

**Access:** Friars Cliff has café, toilets, accessible toilet and showers. Sloping tarmac paths reach the beach, while level promenade access is available from Avon Beach car park by walking east.

**Arrival:** The map opens The Beach Hut Cafe at Friars Cliff, a promenade landmark west of the road entrance. Keep your dog on a lead and follow the promenade east to the wave wall, then use the signed beach section towards H4. The cafe pin is not the dog-zone boundary.

**Before you go:** The summer permission is a bounded section, not the full Blue Flag beach. Use the specific dog-zone map rather than the general beach page for the boundary.

### Highcliffe Beach east of Groyne H8

**Best for:** An eastern Highcliffe option beyond the May to September H4 to H8 exclusion.

**Dog rule:** Dogs are welcome all year east of Groyne H8. BCP does not allow dogs between groynes H4 and H8 from 1 May to 30 September, while the section west of H4 is the separate Friars Cliff choice.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs on leads on promenades, cliff paths and zig zags at all times.

**Access:** Highcliffe Cliff Top car park has over 400 spaces, toilets and the Cliffhanger Café. The eastern Chewton Bunny approach is mainly tarmac.

**Arrival:** Start at Highcliffe Cliff Top Car Park, the Council-listed arrival. Follow the signed paths to the beach east of Groyne H8. Keep your dog on a lead on paths and do not cross the H4 to H8 sand from 1 May to 30 September.

**Before you go:** Do not use the H4 to H8 interval from 1 May to 30 September. The western zone is covered separately as Friars Cliff, so this card does not duplicate it.

## Questions about dog-friendly beaches in Bournemouth

### Which BCP beaches can I use with a dog in summer?

Use the exact all-year sections, including Sandbanks towards Haven Point, the named Chine strips, east of Fisherman’s Walk, Hengistbury Head, Mudeford Sandbank and the defined Christchurch groyne sections. Check the Council map and signs.

### What changes from 1 May to 30 September?

Dogs are not allowed on BCP’s main Blue Flag and Seaside Award beaches then. The cards in this guide identify the specific exceptions, not a blanket permission for a nearby main beach.

### Do dogs need leads on Bournemouth’s seafront?

Yes. BCP requires dogs to be on leads on promenades, piers, zig zags and footpaths at all times. At Hengistbury Head, dogs must also be on leads off the beach in the nature reserve.

### How do I reach Mudeford Sandbank on foot?

Start at Hengistbury Head car park and follow the level walk of about one mile to the Sandbank. Mudeford Quay is the separate ferry departure across the harbour entrance, not the land route.
