Choose a BCP beach zone before setting out

Between 1 May and 30 September, the green section on the BCP map matters more than the nearest broad beach name. Check the linked rule and on-site signs before stepping onto the sand.

What “dog friendly” means here

Every card links to the source for its rule and access details. A beach can be dog friendly only in a named part. Promenades, piers, zig zags and footpaths have an all-year lead rule even where the sand is permitted.

Poole and west Bournemouth

Poole and west Bournemouth

Sandbanks and the Council-mapped Chine strips are distinct year-round choices. The surrounding resort beaches are not automatically included.

The useful short answers

Questions about dog-friendly Bournemouth beaches

Which BCP beaches can I use with a dog in summer?

Use the exact all-year sections, including Sandbanks towards Haven Point, the named Chine strips, east of Fisherman’s Walk, Hengistbury Head, Mudeford Sandbank and the defined Christchurch groyne sections. Check the Council map and signs.

What changes from 1 May to 30 September?

Dogs are not allowed on BCP’s main Blue Flag and Seaside Award beaches then. The cards in this guide identify the specific exceptions, not a blanket permission for a nearby main beach.

Do dogs need leads on Bournemouth’s seafront?

Yes. BCP requires dogs to be on leads on promenades, piers, zig zags and footpaths at all times. At Hengistbury Head, dogs must also be on leads off the beach in the nature reserve.

How do I reach Mudeford Sandbank on foot?

Start at Hengistbury Head car park and follow the level walk of about one mile to the Sandbank. Mudeford Quay is the separate ferry departure across the harbour entrance, not the land route.
