# Dog-friendly beaches in Anglesey

Last checked: 16 September 2026. Eight coastal choices with current Council zones, lead rules and practical arrival information.

## North-east coast

Three village beaches where the summer dog choice is a specific Council-mapped section, not the broad beach name.

### Cemaes Bay

**Best for:** A summer visit when you can use either the small western beach or the far end of the main bay.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, Anglesey Council's current map bans dogs from the main controlled part of Cemaes Bay. Its green areas are the small beach west of the main bay and the far end of the main beach.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be kept on leads on Cemaes Bay promenade.

**Access:** The current Anglesey Coastal Path description reaches Cemaes through a car park and along the promenade. Use the promenade on lead, then the mapped summer section.

**Arrival:** Use Cemaes Bay Beach as the named arrival, follow the beachfront car park and promenade, and then use the small western beach or far end of the main beach in summer.

**Before you go:** The seasonal control applies from 1 May to 30 September. The map's green areas, not a general bay pin, define the summer choice.

### Benllech Beach

**Best for:** A serviced beach day with a signed, lead-only route to the southern summer dog sand.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, Anglesey Council's map bans dogs from Benllech's main controlled sand. A marked green corridor along the promenade edge leads to the permitted sand beyond the southern end.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be kept on leads on Benllech promenade.

**Access:** Visit Anglesey lists parking, public toilets, cafés and a bookable beach wheelchair. Use the signed promenade-edge corridor, on lead, to reach the permitted southern-end sand in summer.

**Arrival:** Arrive at Benllech Beach, keep dogs on leads on the promenade, and use the marked green corridor rather than crossing the restricted sand.

**Before you go:** The seasonal control applies from 1 May to 30 September. Book the beach wheelchair in advance if needed.

### Llanddona Beach

**Best for:** A long beach with simple car-park facilities and a map-defined summer section.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, Anglesey Council's map bans dogs from its designated Llanddona area. Green map sections beyond the marked boundary remain the summer dog choice.

**Lead rule:** No promenade lead rule is listed for Llanddona on the Council's current restrictions page. Keep dogs controlled and follow local signs.

**Access:** Visit Anglesey lists a beach car park, toilets, a seasonal café, picnic tables and a tourist-information hut. The beach is reached from the car park.

**Arrival:** Use Llanddona Beach car park, then use the green section beyond the map’s marked boundary.

**Before you go:** The Council's seasonal control runs from 1 May to 30 September. The map is rotated, so use its marked boundary rather than assuming a compass direction.

## Menai and south-west

A pier-defined town shore, a rocky wildlife coast and Newborough’s beach-and-reserve setting.

### Beaumaris Beach

**Best for:** A Menai Strait stroll using the pier as a clear summer dog-zone landmark.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, Anglesey Council's map bans dogs from the beach west of Beaumaris Pier. The green section is on the shore east and north-east of the pier, toward the castle.

**Lead rule:** No promenade lead rule is listed for Beaumaris on the Council's current restrictions page. Keep dogs controlled and follow local signs.

**Access:** The seafront and pier are a clear arrival landmark. Anglesey Council lists The Green and Castle car and coach park in Beaumaris, and Visit Anglesey’s town walk starts at the pier entrance.

**Arrival:** Use Beaumaris Pier and seafront as the arrival landmark, then use the green shore section east and north-east of the pier rather than the beach west of it.

**Before you go:** The dog restriction is seasonal, from 1 May to 30 September. The pier is the useful on-the-ground boundary.

### Penmon Point

**Best for:** Rock pools, lighthouse views and a wildlife-aware rocky-shore outing.

**Dog rule:** Visit Wales lists Penmon Point as an Anglesey dog-friendly beach. It is not one of the seven Council beaches listed as having seasonal dog restriction areas.

**Lead rule:** Keep dogs closely controlled around wildlife and on the rocky shore. Follow current local signs.

**Access:** Visit Anglesey identifies a pay car park, café and shop at Penmon Point, and the surrounding coast supports seabirds and seals. Cadw says the nearby paid car park is third-party managed and exposed surfaces can be slippery or muddy.

**Arrival:** Use Penmon Point as the named arrival. Park near the lighthouse and keep clear of wildlife on the rocky shore.

**Before you go:** This is a rocky shoreline rather than a broad sandy resort beach. Keep dogs away from seals and seabirds. Rocks and exposed surfaces can be slippery or muddy.

### Llanddwyn, Newborough

**Best for:** A dune-and-forest day using the permitted beach section and current reserve signs.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, Anglesey Council's map bans dogs from the Llanddwyn section toward the island. The permitted green shoreline is east of the main access path. Natural Resources Wales also directs visitors to seasonal dog restrictions and Beach car park signs.

**Lead rule:** On Ynys Llanddwyn, dogs are only allowed on the public right of way and must be on a short lead. From 1 April to 1 September, keep dogs on formal paths and a short lead in open dune areas and on the island.

**Access:** Natural Resources Wales identifies Beach car park as the main car park for beach and forest, with toilets normally open daily on a seasonal timetable. Visit Anglesey says the beach wheelchair must be booked in advance.

**Arrival:** Use Beach car park, the main Newborough beach-and-forest car park at the end of the access road. Follow the signed main access path and use the shoreline east of it in summer. Follow the public right of way and reserve signs if continuing to Ynys Llanddwyn.

**Before you go:** The seasonal dog restriction runs from 1 May to 30 September. From 1 April to 1 September, keep dogs on a short lead and formal paths in the open dunes and on Ynys Llanddwyn.

## Holy Island

One autumn-to-spring cove and one summer-mapped bay close to Holyhead.

### Porth Dafarch

**Best for:** A sheltered cove for October to April, with a slipway and accessible facilities.

**Dog rule:** Anglesey Council's current Porth Dafarch map bans dogs from the whole cove beach from 1 May to 30 September. Treat it as an October to April beach choice, rather than a summer zoned alternative.

**Lead rule:** No promenade lead rule is listed for Porth Dafarch on the Council's current restrictions page. Keep dogs controlled and follow local signs.

**Access:** Visit Anglesey lists public toilets, disabled facilities and a slipway ramp onto the beach. Its coastal-path description reaches the toilets and slipway from the road-side approach.

**Arrival:** Use Porth Dafarch Beach and the slipway beside the public toilets for an October to April visit. Do not take dogs onto the cove sand from 1 May to 30 September.

**Before you go:** The whole cove beach is controlled from 1 May to 30 September. Use a different listed beach for a summer dog-sand visit.

### Trearddur Bay

**Best for:** A village beach day using the rockier western section during the summer control.

**Dog rule:** From 1 May to 30 September, Anglesey Council's map bans dogs from Trearddur Bay's main inner bay. The green summer section is on the rockier western side.

**Lead rule:** Dogs must be kept on leads on Trearddur Bay promenade.

**Access:** Use the named beach arrival and promenade. The Council’s current map is needed to reach the rockier western permitted section rather than the controlled inner bay.

**Arrival:** Use Trearddur Bay Beach as the named arrival, keep dogs on leads on the promenade, and follow the map to the western green section.

**Before you go:** The Council seasonal restriction runs from 1 May to 30 September. The promenade lead rule applies even where the sand is permitted.

## Questions about dog-friendly Anglesey beaches

### Which Anglesey beaches have summer dog controls?

Anglesey Council controls named areas at Beaumaris, Benllech, Cemaes Bay, Llanddona, Llanddwyn, Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay from 1 May to 30 September. The cards name the usable mapped section, or Porth Dafarch’s whole-cove seasonal ban.

### Can I use a beach name alone to find the summer dog area?

No. A named beach can include both a restricted section and a dog section. Use the Council map linked from each card and the signs at the entrance. Benllech’s green route, for example, runs along the promenade edge to the southern sand.

### Where do Anglesey promenade lead rules apply?

Dogs must be on leads on the promenades at Benllech, Cemaes Bay and Trearddur Bay. That rule is separate from the seasonal rules for the sand.

### What should I plan for at Newborough and Penmon?

At Newborough, use Beach car park and follow both the seasonal dog signs and separate reserve signs if heading to Ynys Llanddwyn. Penmon Point is a rocky wildlife shore, so keep dogs away from seals and seabirds and take care on slippery ground.
